In 1997 the HST payload saw the advent of two new instruments. After an initial period during which the instrument in-flight responses are assessed and understood, and the calibration software and the data flow stabilise, the CADC and ST-ECF started working together on the extension of the on-the-fly (OTF) calibration pipeline to support NICMOS and STIS.

In this article the design and the implementation of such pipeline are shown. The core section is dedicated to the scientific merit of OTF, by comparing the scientific achievements (in form of colour-magnitude diagrams) obtained using data calibrated at the time of the observation versus the ones obtained using on-the-fly re-calibrated data.
