T3.1 Tera-Data Analysis & Visualization

Paul Woodward (U of MN)

Both astronomical observations and numerical simulations of astrophysical systems are generating very large data sets that demand very high resolution displays. At the Laboratory for Computational Science & Engineering (LCSE) at the University of Minnesota, we are developing systems and software to address this need. These involve terabyte-scale, fibre-channel based, network-attached disk systems coneected to multiple SGI Infinite Reality graphics systems for interactive image rendering, animation, and display at the very high resolution of the PowerWall system. This system and software will be discussed and illustrated through examples drawn from astrophysical gas dynamics simulations which generated multi- terabyte data sets for analysis and visualization.
