AIPS++ is a collaborative project among several consortium sites to develop a common data reduction system applicable to both single-dish and interferometric radio-astronomical data. A central aim of this project is the development of a common calibration and imaging formalism that is instrument independent, yet allows the development of customized applications where appropriate. The design of a unified calibration system is discussed, with attention to both the user and programmer interface, and the integration of calibration into the system architecture as a whole. Implications for application development in this environment are discussed.
