The Digital Versatile Disk, successor of the CD-R as a direct-access, cheap archive media has been announced a while ago but has been long to materialize. This presentation will review the current situation with DVDs and assess the suitability and maturity of the technology for astronomical data archives. Considerations such as cost per unit of capacity, durability, format issues and compatibility will be addressed.

The DVD-R current projects and achievements at ESO will be presented.
